West Mecklenburg High School is located in western Mecklenburg County. The School opened in 1951. With a student body of approximately 1,943 students, the demographics are as follows: 62.9% African American, 11.6% Caucasian, 5.6% Asian, 7.1% Multi-Racial, 12.5% American Indian, and 0.3% Pacific Islander. Approximately 17.7% of students are Hispanic. The school has a diverse student population with 3.5% Academically Gifted, 11.1% Students with Disabilities, 71.4% Free/Reduced Lunch, and 8.3% Limited English Proficient.
West Mecklenburg High School is comprised of 165 licensed/certified staff. The degree distribution is as follows: 72% Bachelor's, 26.2% Master's, and 1.8% Advanced Certificate or Doctorate. Also, 63% of the staff has 4+ years of teaching experience. Currently 7% of the staff are National Board Certified. Our AVID College Readiness System has been a certified site since 1997 and will be seeking National Demonstration Site status this school year. West Mecklenburg High School houses the Foreign Language Immersion program for high school and also takes pride in its strong academic, fine arts, and vocational curricula along with its outstanding extracurricular and athletic programs. The college prep curriculum includes Advanced, Academically Gifted and AP courses. The advanced technical prep program includes courses offered through a strong College Tech Prep program, the Academy for Medical Science and the Academy for Tourism and Travel. West Mecklenburg has had a nationally ranked debate team for two years. |
